The first question you should be asking yourself is “Is your IT budget bloated”?
I know it is.
The reason it is bloated is because every component, product, license, and service from almost any IT provider or product developer is taking advantage of the fact that most people just don’t know what anything costs. This is true all around us. Our everyday life in America has become the necessity to work our asses off, work our fingers to the bone, to make just enough money to see it slip through our hands to pay someone else for something we need: heating, lighting, food, education, health care, taxes, etc. Our country is setup that way. It is not setup to allow families to save money for a rainy day, or for their children’s education, at least not like it used to be. Everyone is a service provider now. Its like we don’t even have money at all. It’s like “they” know exactly how much you make in your household and figure out how to take that amount, plus one more dollar, away from you. Its a conspiracy without conspirators! Our cash could go straight form our employers to the services we need, and we wouldn’t need to even see it.
Well, IT providers are no different. I am blowing the whistle because since I started NMJ Technology LLC in 2012, my IT Managed Services Provider in Northeast Ohio, I have learned a LOT about the process. What I have learned the most is actually how cheaply these services can be provided. How do I know this? Because we’re doing it.
When I started this company, I wanted to make sure that we had something to provide for every facet of every IT infrastructure. The amazing thing is that it doesn’t matter what your business is – manufacturing, medical, government, professional services, restaurant, dealerships, real estate, museums, and … enter your own type here – your underlying IT infrastructure is exactly the same as the next business’. You have networks with servers, devices, users, workstations, routers, firewalls, switches, protective appliances or services, internet service providers, phone systems, video systems, clouds, and … enter your own technology here. To support these components in any network for any business type, the needs are the same, the risks are the same, the successes are the same, and the failures are the same, there is no discrimination between the businesses that utilize these same components. And it doesn’t matter how large you are. A 5 user network uses the same components as the 1000 user network. We scale to your business capacity.
The issue is that you are told by the “industry” is that it is going to cost mega boatloads of money to support your infrastructure. What is happening is that your IT providers are just getting rich form the margin they have created. Trust me, that margin is NOT 10%, 20%, or even 40% … in many cases, these providers are charging you a 100%, 200%, or even 400% or more markup on their back end to provide you with the services and products and licensing. You have just learned to accept it, like your household bills, like the taxes you pay, like anything else you have just “gotten used to” to live your life. You don’t question it any more, it is so ingrained in your daily routine. But you SHOULD be asking the question… “Is our IT budget bloated”? Like I said, I know it is.

Or do they solve this one, but each week is fraught with a new issue, one that seems it shouldn’t have needed to appear, because why should anything change? Do you wonder why each time your IT “experts” come to work on your network, its a new guy that you have to sort of break in again only to find they have moved on a few weeks or months later? Have you never just asked yourself, even if everything is running perfectly, “Are we handling this business network in the right way”? If these providers are charging you by the hour, isn’t this just frosting your windshield with frustration? Well, it’s possible that they could simply NOT have a clue about the issues … OR …
I know another secret, job security. Don’t be surprised if your hourly paid IT experts aren’t actually creating the issue that gives them the necessity to appear and work on them, and to become able to bill you at the end of the month for fixing these… uhem … “issues”. I have worked side by side with many characters in my lifetime in the world of IT. I have always been amazed at the devious thoughts that a few of these characters have to keep themselves in a stack of support tickets that keep busy and drive up their billable hours. Its unethical, but it happens. We IT people know how to fix many different issues, so why would it be so hard to imagine these people using their knowledge on how to fix something in reverse to actually break something. You discover something broken, and call them. They spin their wheels a few hours, then they finally go in and undo the break THEY created …. 15 seconds of time … and bill you 3 hours at $150 per hour to fix that “surprising issue that appeared out of the blue”. I have seen guys force hardware to fail with a screw driver! The pirating of software is another HUGE no-no. I have seen companies that have been installed using the same licensing that has been found at other locations also supported by that same support group. The list of possible infringements goes on.
And don’t for one second believe that, because this managed service provider may charge you a flat monthly fee instead of by the hour, that it doesn’t still happen. These support personnel work hourly for a living. That IT managed provider may charge you by the month, but they still pay their people by the hour. These people still have to drive up their billable hours in a company to 1) keep them viable to the company and 2) bloat their own paycheck.
Why would you trust NMJ Technology LLC? The answer is simply, I stole a Chapstick once. After that, my conscience nagged on my brain for days until I went back to the store and paid for it. I just simply cannot commit the simplest infraction without it driving my entire moral compass into a spin. I demand the same from anyone involved with NMJ Technology LLC. Also, your current providers will typically keep everything secret like they are running your IT from Area 51. It’s YOUR network. You deserve, and it is REQUIRED by MY business that you know how your processes run. IT managed service providers do everything they can to make THEM indispensable in your IT infrastructure. But the truth is, ANY provider can do what that provider does for you. Our situation is the same, anyone can do what NMJ can do for your IT infrastructure, we may NOT be indispensable to your business. But I know that once we get your ailing network stable and running, we will become indispensable to you. You might have legitimate ailments in your IT infrastructure, or they might be invented for you by your IT support team. The fact is, you shouldn’t need to wonder about these at all. We WANT our clients to run smoothly. We WANT to not hear form clients about a nagging issue that never goes away. We WANT clients to know how our services work for them and how they can also keep an eye on things. I don’t mean to toot my own horn, but “BEEP-ity BEEP”, because the best relationship with a client are ones where they rarely see me working on crap that seem to perpetually exist.
To tell you the truth, I don’t really exactly know how it is I do my job. When I was employed by previous employers during my career, I was always asked to “Go do what you do”. I would say, “what is it I do”? The answer was always, “I don’t rightly know, but all I know is that when no one else can figure something out, you get it fixed in no time.” All I can say about this is that there are a multitude of ways to approach any one task on a business network. Very few of them are the right way to handle that task. I seem to know they right ways, and the number of IT “experts” that think they know what they are doing, and who are rarely doing thing right, is amazingly high.
So I think I have beaten this bush quite enough. I think you are getting my point by now.
