I do have a major fault in my business model. I don’t oversell clients on things they don’t need.
I am an engineer first. I am a user second. And I am a sales guy somewhere below that. I am not in it to make gobs of money off your business. I could be like every other provider and rake in the 100%-1000% margin. That’s what they all do. The IT industry has gotten to that point where it’s not about making a modest 5%, 10%,20% or even 40% profit on products and services. It’s about driving up the perceived costs of these services and make you all believe it actually costs you this much more to take care of your network. What I do for you network for a few hundred dollars a month, other providers will do at the tune of $3000, $4000, $5000 or MORE per month. And they have figured out how to sell that to you.
I can only do so much without sounding like I am just trying to get a business to buy more stuff just to buy more stuff. Business owners all expect me to be just like the other managed and IT providers and partners. But once they get to know me, they know I am NOT all about the Holy Dollar. If I were, I wouldn’t sell my services at rock bottom costs and throw in my labor. That’s my business model and it works for me. But every time I look at my balance sheet, I want to shoot myself in the foot, because that is essentially what I do for my bottom line. But I will continue to sell your the services you need for a modest margin for my business.
I don’t even feel comfortable scamming, scheming, ripping off a business. I have to live with myself. I have to go to sleep at night with a clear conscience. If I performed like any other provider, I would just become another one of them. And I would lose sight of my morality. For me, it is quite different. You can believe that when I am telling you something, it is not because I am selling you something. I hope that my mere presence and and personality sells you on ME. And once you know me, you know I am not about raking in your dough… just because I could.
What that should mean to you is when I begin to “go after you” on some sort of need for your business network, you can be sure I am telling you what you need. Not what I want you to buy. You see, I am selfish about my time, as well as my reputation. I don’t believe I have the reputation of ripping any off. In fact, if anything, I am ripping myself off. I don’t want to spend many extra hours installing things I sold you that you don’t need, that is wasted time for me and your business. I want to go home in the evenings, I want to get away for the weekends. Its selfish of me NOT to sell you a ton of crap you don’t need, because ultimately, I have to put it all together, make it all work and keep it all going. I want to do that for you, but only if it is what you need.
So, if you feel like you are being sold a bill of goods and you’re skeptical, chances are you have good intuition. Don’t believe everything someone is telling you when they list what you need for your business. In most cases, you don’t need it. Maybe you want it. That’s an entirely different thing. But if you don’t know any better, most providers will definitely sell it to you regardless of your true needs.
